Kalu Kumale initiated this award to address the lack of writers covering the art world. Recognizing that underappreciated and unnoticed artists could greatly benefit from increased exposure, he sought to encourage writing about them. This innovative program was the first of its kind, with Kalu Kumale providing both financial and moral support. The award was named after his wife, Laxmi Maya.
His backing has been instrumental in supporting writers who focus on the noteworthy art that deserves wider recognition. By showing appreciation for their work, these writers can bring both artists and themselves into the spotlight, overcoming the challenges they face in the competitive world of art and writing.
